About Gary

Gary  George  General  Carpentry is my small dedicated carpentry business previously located in the Haliburton Highlands where most of the features shown on this site were built. A recent relocation back to the Niagara area has me once again searching for new and old clients in that area. Projects taken on are given direct and personal attention. In short, this one man operation handles the majority of work performed directly.  Rarely are there sub-contract situations undertaken with the exception of where prudent such as with electrical or plumbing needs. Trim and finish carpentry is my specialty however I do much more. Decks and related outbuildings are just the right size project for this personally service oriented company. Flooring in wood or tile and wall treatments such a solid wood paneling or Wainscoting are the sort of jobs I excel at. My background as a Cabinet Maker stretches back to the early 1980’s and spans not only rustic and modern furniture construction but also kitchen cabinetry and store fixtures. By now you’ve noticed that several of the feature projects on this site are main street store fronts in the Minden and Haliburton area. These projects are accessible and eye catching and I would encourage you to visit these various locations to see first hand the caliber of just one of my strengths.

My personal policy is one project at a time done in a timely manner. I don’t double book unless the scope of a project demands it. I do all my own estimates, never low ball to get the job and come back later with a list of extra’s after the job is underway, always striving to get the work done below the estimated amount. I would much rather surprise you with savings at the end of a job rather than asking for more to complete the project.

No job is too small, I like to take on a wide variety of carpentry projects with time lines that are just as varied. The idea is that this keeps my important skills up to speed. It seems to work, as each new client seems to bring a new challenge and with that comes a new idea or technique to offer to future clients.

A general list of skills and techniques; The following represent the types of projects you might consider hiring me to handle for you.

  • Outdoor Living; gazebos, decks, fences, privacy walls and out buildings related.
  • Trim Carpentry; mouldings, doors, windows, counter tops and decorative home upgrades.
  • Cabinetry;  furniture, store fixtures, shelving systems and built ins like kitchens or wall units.
  • Flooring; hardwood, engineered wood floors, laminate and ceramic and similar tile.
  • Exterior Upgrades; wood and other sidings, roofing (asphalt or cedar shingles or metal). Window and door treatments and weather proofing.
  • Buildings; garages, sheds, storage buildings, boathouse upgrades and renovations and small barns.
  • General Renovations; additions, including all details from frame to roof and everything in between. I always bring in electricians and plumbers for these sorts of jobs but for all the rest from the frame to the drywall to the flooring and on through every detail right down to the final clean up and paint touch ups I am onsite and doing the majority of the work.

My personal view points regarding contractor and client relationships;

I’ll always give an honest and fair evaluation of your project, sometimes at the risk of not landing the job. I would rather tell you something you would prefer not to hear and risk not securing your project than simply turn a blind eye and go ahead despite potential ill advised endeavors. One of my firmly held beliefs is the idea that we are partners in any upgrade to your real estate, your success is my success. If what we choose to undertake on your property doesn’t meet all the tests of genuine value added enhancement or improvement I’d rather not do it. I want the projects we undertake together to hold up to the test of time and continue to satisfy you or whomever may be a future stakeholder. As a carpenter these projects are my legacy and as the property owner they are also yours as well as perhaps one of the most important investments you possess. My first job is to protect these things and keeping these two details in mind is my motivation and that results in total customer satisfaction.

By now you’ve no doubt realized I take a less than typical approach, I hope you’ll see that my results aren’t typical either.
